Michael Jackson’s Choices of Private Hong Kong Tour
Why Michael visited Hong Kong
It was during Michael Jackson’s worldwide Bad tour, which kicked off in Tokyo, Japan in September of 1987. Michael loved Chinese movies, kung fu and Bruce Lee but he had never been to Hong Kong at that time so he decided to go. However he also said if there was any press at Hong Kong airport he would turn around and go back to Japan.
On October 21, Jackson and his entourage arrived on a private jet at Kai Tak International Airport, and the press were waiting. So his friend Dr Penguin made a female singer dress like Michael appearing at the airport running around to draw the attention of the press. The trick succeeded and Michael came out of the airport without any reporters around.
Michael planned to stay in Hong Kong for 2 days only but it turned out he enjoyed the city so much that it became a 3-week trip.
Here is the list of the places he visited:
1. Duddell’s
Michael’s friend Dr Penguin put on a special show for him involving kung fu show, magic show and live music at the legendary Duddell’s.
2. Ocean Park
Michael was looking for a roller coaster for Neverland so he wanted to test it out at that time. Michael and Dr Penguin were the last two on the roller coaster when everyone else gave up throwing up and Michael just kept going again and again. He also tried the swing ride and cable car!
3. Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station
Michael did not get into troubles with a bar fight or something. It was reported that he visited the police station in Tsim Sha Tsui, running with the policemen, and the reason behind was unknown.
4. Ocean Centre & Hong Kong Hotel
It was reported that Michael was staying at (Omni) Hong Kong Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. He loved shopping and visited Ocean Centre. He was spotted visiting jewellery shops, book stores there.
5. Shaw Brothers Studio & Sir Run Run Shaw’s mansion
Because loving Hong Kong movies was one of the main reasons that Michael wanted to visit Hong Kong. Therefore he visited the biggest Movie maker and studio Shaw Brothers Studio in Hong Kong at that time. He was welcomed by Hong Kong stars such as Simon Yam, Joey Wang, Liza Wang. The King of Pop even tried on the Chinese Emperor Costume and posted for photo shooting. He even had dinner with the owner of Shaw Brothers Studio Sir Run Run Shaw at his mansion because the Hong Kong movie giant lent him his Rolls-Royce during his trip.
6. Guangdong, China & Macau
Michael had a day trip in China and Macau and it was told that he didn’t enjoy much so he returned to Hong Kong right after.
7. Aberdeen
Michael took on sampan in Aberdeen.
8. Open-top sightseeing bus
Michael was standing on the upper deck of a open-top sightseeing bus running and he looked like he was worried that he might hit the neon light signs.
9. Victoria Harbour
From the photo, Michael looked like he was on a yacht. Fans can enjoy the same view by taking Star Ferry.
Michael was supposed to come to Hong Kong in 1993 to do a concert at Sha Tin Racecourse during his Dangerous tour. Unfortunately it was cancelled and Jackson never came back to the city before his death in 2009.
