Uncovering the Hidden Gems: A Guide to the Secrets of Repulse Bay
Repulse Bay is my favourite beach in Hong Kong because there is a nice beach with restaurants & shops around, which I can relax on the beach and then go enjoy a nice meal with beer watching the ocean.
It needs no introduction but indeed there are some fun facts about this beautiful beach.
Imported Sand!
Repulse Bay is known for its beautiful sandy beach, but the sand on the beach is actually imported from Hainan Island in China. Due to erosion over the years, the original sand was gradually washed away, and imported sand was used to replenish it.
The name "Repulse Bay" has an interesting origin. It is believed to have come from the 19th-century incident when the British warship HMS Repulse fought against pirates in the bay. The British navy successfully repulsed the pirates, giving the bay its name.
The iconic statue of Kwun Yam (Goddess of Mercy) facing the sea in Repulse Bay is the tallest outdoor bronze statue in Hong Kong, standing at 23 meters (75 feet) tall. It is a popular attraction and a symbol of peace and compassion.
Repulse Bay's design and layout were carefully planned with feng shui principles in mind. The buildings in the area are arranged to maximize the flow of positive energy, and the statue of Kwun Yam facing the sea is believed to bring good fortune and protection to the area. That is why the area is home to luxurious high-rise apartments, opulent villas, and upscale housing estates. Many wealthy locals and expatriates choose to live in this prestigious area due to its beautiful surroundings and proximity to the beach.
