Top 3 Tai O Street Food You Must Try!

Tai O Street Food is an exciting way to experience the local food culture of this fishing village. Here are my favourite street food in Tai O of Hong Kong:

-Grilled squid, you can close your eyes to find it because the smell is all over Tai O! This is one of the most popular street food in Tai O, and you can usually find vendors grilling fresh squid on skewers. The squid is seasoned and served hot and crispy.

-Grilled yellow croaker fish roe is my favourite! (燒黃花魚魚子) Grilled yellow croaker fish (黃花魚) and its roe (魚子) are seasoned with soy sauce, sugar, and other spices before being grilled over charcoal. It is highly valued for its rich and savory flavor. It is a must-try when visiting Tai O.

-Cha Guo (茶果) is a type of traditional Chinese pastry that is popular in the southern regions of China. The name "茶果" literally means "tea pastry" or "tea cake," as it is often served with tea as a snack or dessert. The pastry consists of a thin, crispy outer layer made from glutinous rice flour and wheat flour, which is then filled with various sweet or savory fillings. Common fillings include red bean paste, lotus seed paste, sesame paste, peanuts, and even meat or vegetables. If you visit Tai O, be sure to try the “shop” aka the home of 謝九婆 (Ms Tse) /茶果財 where the 80-year-old uncle still makes them every day for decades.

You can also try Giant Fish balls. Fish balls is a popular street food in outlying islands like Cheung Chai & Tai O of Lantau Island. Kids love them.
