Treasure Hunting Hong Kong Traditional Ceramic Kitchenwares as Souvenirs like Indiana Jones
Even though this shop has no sign hanging and is so tiny, it is surprisingly eye catching to me. In fact it is called “Fuk Shing Yuen Kee” 福成元記 in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong Island.
The uncle running this shop inherited the business from his father, which ran a much bigger shop in another location back in the days. The shop sells many old designs of ceramic kitchenwares which were commonly used by Hong Kong families in the old days.
That’s why local people call the shop owner “Uncle Rooster Bowl” because many people would come to this shop to buy the famous rooster bowl which was the icon of Hong Kong. Rooster bowl was commonly found in Tai Pai Dongs, households everywhere in Hong Kong in the last century. But I didn’t buy the rooster bowl because I don’t like the modern design plus I don’t find much connection between me the the bowl.
I found a green cup which was used by my uncle when I was little and all the memories just came back when I saw it. Indeed I didn’t know what it’s called. Uncle Rooster Bowl told me it is “Jade Bamboo Cup” (翠竹杯), such a beautiful name and they were the last two. I got one and the other one is still in the shop.
I bought another bowl which Uncle Rooster Bowl said it was commonly used in congee shops back in the days and also they were the last two. Then I realised Uncle Rooster Bowl was such an outstanding salesman. He knows the value of his products and what his customers are looking for.
I bought them not because of the rarity but the craftsmanship, especially those from the old days. The shop may be small, but the collections are big enough for you to look for the hidden treasures which you will love!
